Survey 37 - Cigarette breaks

Survey 37 - "As a non-smoker, do you take the same breaks as smokers?"

Throughout June, our survey took a close look at smokers and non-smokers breaks and whether non-smokers actually took the amount and length of breaks that smokers do. The survey found that 74% of non-smokers did NOT take the same amount of breaks that smokers do in a day.

Non-smokers are concerned about this unfair treatment and the controversial issue has lead to much discussion in the media. Many people feel they are left in the office to run the show and man the phones whilst smokers pop out in twos or groups for their fag. They feel they are therefore working longer hours and having to deal with more workload than what smokers may do in a days work. Some people feel it actually causes disruption to people's daily work plan and tasks and causes lack of concentration.

If you think about the number of hours over 1 month that are lost if smokers are taking an average 15 minutes break, twice per day, that gives a 600 minutes (10 hours) in just 1 month. Just think how much work could be done in that time and how much is lost by the business !

Eventually, to resolve these concerns companies may introduce non-smokers breaks or reduced lunch hours for those who take multiple breaks. Some companies have in fact banned smoking from workers and even smoking outside the offices in uniforms, before and after work; Marks and Spencers recently introduced this new rule. Some have also said their smoking staff must work extra hours - Nottingham City Council introduced this rule in October last year.
